The White Elephant gift exchange is a traditional gift-giving game played by friends during the holiday season. The rules of the game are simple, and it can be played with any number of people.
The rules are: One person hosts a White Elephant Gift Exchange and everyone brings an unwanted gift. The host randomly draws numbers to determine which gifts will be “stolen” and re-gifted by other players. All gifts drawn are wrapped in plain wrapping paper — no bows, ribbons, or tags. The game is over when everyone has received a gift and opened it.
The point is not to receive the best gift, but to get one you really don’t want! This provides an opportunity for friendly humor and teasing about your “stolen” gift. If you receive a truly awful present, you have the option of stealing someone else’s present later on in the game.
Once all gifts are opened, those who brought presents must come clean about the hidden value (or lack thereof) of their presents; this is called “Passing Go.” When all players have passed go, each player rates every other player’s gift from best to worst. The winner is determined by adding up all points from worst to best given by others.
A white elephant is a burdensome possession that serves no purpose. They were a real problem in the past before refrigeration and heating made it possible to keep food from spoiling. White elephants still show up in tales and gift exchanges today.
Why do we have white elephants? Because we have friends and family, and it is part of human nature to want to give them things. When you think about what you might give someone, you probably start with what you would like to get yourself. If you are lucky enough to have a job, then most of what you want you can buy for yourself. But there are also many things that cost more than you can afford–houses, cars, trips around the world–and some things that do not exist at all–unicorns, perpetual motion machines–or exist but are only available at an exorbitant price–magic scepters or the services of a time-traveling assassin.
