Ask Rad Rat (#14) - Is Revive RUINING Skateboarding? Are Fingerboards Cool?

blank skate decks

welcome back to ask radrat I've got a really good question for you today it is from Cody Benson who asks is revive ruining skateboarding so for those of you not really familiar with the company it started with this guy Andy Schrock he had a YouTube channel and he got really popular putting out his videos like skits and just fun little things people love to watch them and he started

to sell merchandise different little things and eventually he sold decks and they sold out made more sold out more and more now he's got a giant warehouse and he's like a legitimate big skateboard company but a lot of people have a problem with the way he runs his business so the typical model you know look at almost or someone like that they have some of the best pros in the world and they pay

for them to you know film video parts or go to contests or demos or tours or things like that but what revive does is a little bit different they don't have the best pros in the world they've got a good team but they're not really the same professional level as the other brands out there but what they do is they use them to promote them through social channels so you'll have people who

are popular on YouTube being a pro skater you know and that makes sense from a business side because you know you want people who have fans to promote your product of course you know look at a watch company like Breitling they have ads with George Clooney sitting there with a watch on it's not that you really trust his word about watches it's just they're trying to reach out to his fans right so

having people like Johnny Geiger or Aaron Cairo they have their own followings on YouTube so it makes sense to sponsor them or turn them pro you know and try to build a business that way so from a business side I think that's fine it makes sense and it's a skater owned company right so there's no problem there but I think what people really have a problem with is the fact that they're not really

supporting skateboarding in the same way you know their team isn't out there killing demos and world tours and really you know making kids want to skate in supporting the industry by making you know growing skateboarding and having people want to buy more of different things it's I'm not really sure that that's fair so to say that Braille is in building up skateboarding is not really the case if you if you're a first-time skater just

got your board and or you're not haven't even bought one yet and you sit down your computer and you type up what size deck should I buy you're gonna see the Braille channel with the aaron chiral on it and he's going to talk through the different size boards and he's going to test a mountain from you and show you and talk about how they feel so sure it's not really a pro

video part but it is still helping people get into skateboarding so it's just kind of a different market and I think it's it's doing its own thing and I think it has a place in skateboarding now the real problem would be if other companies try to copy their business model if major brands start to kick out their pro teams and just film the funny YouTube videos at lunch with their warehouse guys then that

might start to be a problem in skateboarding but I wouldn't worry about that because as soon as a major company starts kicking out they're big pros you know someone's going to get them you know if day-long song suddenly doesn't have almost anymore someone else is going to grab them and then that team that actually still has pros is just going to be the biggest brain in skateboarding so I don't really think it's a

major problem I think that he's doing his own thing in a cool way I think it's smart from a business perspective and I think they're pretty cool it's not a brand that I really care to go by or anything but I don't think there's anything wrong with them and I don't think they're ruining skateboarding alright my next question is from Gatlin man and he asks what do you think of fingerboarding so for anyone

my age I'm 28 you probably had a tech deck in middle school in high school they kind of blew up around the turn of the century and you know they always had this stigma of just being like lame and for posers and all that kind of stuff there's actually an interview on jenkum with this pro finger border he's Pro because he sells like a ramps and stuff not because he is a

pro finger boarder but it's interesting because they're always trying to make fun and in all of his answers he has to bring up that he actually skates it's actually kind of funny so they asked him if you can ever focus a deck like if you get mad you focus your fingerboard and he says like well the only time you ever break your fingerboards if you fall while you're riding your skateboard and he's just

gotta like drive it home and he actually skates like he's got to be so defensive all the time and you know what who cares man if you want a fingerboard just do it I've got one on my desk when I'm waiting for emails at work I'll do some tricks you know I don't think there's anything wrong with that skateboarding is kind of a joke - it's just a big piece of wood that

you bounce off the ground you kick it around and make it do little twirly dudes who cares you know why take it so seriously and so at that same point you know if you take it super seriously and you're decked out and like fingerboard brands and everything and you've out filming stuff all the time and trying to make a business out of it or not a business but trying to like make

a living out of it like you know trying to get sponsors and all that kind of stuff I think you can go a little bit too far with that but you know what about five years ago I started a new job and I would get home after dark I lived on a dirt road no streetlights no garage I had no opportunity to skate but I really wanted to and I would film

some fingerboard tricks you know put together little videos I missed doing that with skateboarding and I just had fun doing that and you know what who cares if you don't like it you don't watch it don't do it that's fine but I don't think there's anything wrong with fingerboarding in itself and I think it's cool go for it so that's all for this video think of some more questions put them in the comments but

until next time here are some more videos I've done lately that you might want to check out check back every single Tuesday I have a new full-length video and stuff like this will be throughout the week thank you for watching
