Every woman I know with makeup on is attractive. And every woman I know without makeup is unattractive.

Women tend to underestimate the importance of makeup.
A study of 40,000 women found that using makeup made women seem less attractive, but did not change men’s perceptions of their attractiveness. However, the study found that men’s perceptions of women’s attractiveness changed when they used makeup.
One theory is that women use makeup primarily to disguise blemishes or wrinkles. Men, on the other hand, use makeup primarily to enhance their features.
Most men do not wear makeup, but when they do, they prefer heavier coverage than women.

It seems natural to suppose that the same things that make us beautiful also make our faces age. But that’s simply not true. The things that make us beautiful also make usage.
The skin’s ability to keep water out is the first thing to go, as wrinkles form. The oil glands, which lubricate the skin, stop working. So the skin dries out, loses its elasticity, and wrinkles.

A woman’s face is her most personal feature. When she goes out, she chooses makeup to wear for effect. People look at her and want to find out what she is like. But the question is not obvious. A woman who looks like herself will go for a neutral foundation and blush because she knows that her real self is reliable. But a woman who looks like herself but suddenly puts on lipstick or mascara may turn out to be less reliable. She may hide her true self behind a mask, and then she may reveal a monster.
The makeup industry exploits this confusion. The companies that make cosmetics spend millions on market research, trying to find what will make women want to wear their products. Of course, some of the results will be obvious: if women like something, they will buy it, and if they don’t, they won’t. But some will be less obvious, like a new shade of blush that a woman will like because she thinks it makes her look thinner. A woman who puts on that blush may discover she has bought into an illusion. If her real self is reliable, it will show through.
This is an interesting lesson, and perhaps an important one. But it is also dangerous. Because cosmetics companies, like everyone else, are in the business of persuading you to buy their products. And when they do that, they are asking you to believe in their version of reality.
This puts women in an invidious position. By wearing the makeup the companies make for women, they encourage other women to believe that makeup is the real thing. They encourage women to believe they are safe, when the opposite may be true. A woman may actually be less safe, because by wearing makeup she may convince herself that she is safer

For example, some women choose to wear eyeliner. Clearly, putting black stuff around the eyes isn’t very effective; black eyeliner tends to smudge and tears off.

The reasons given for wearing makeup seem to vary from person to person.
Some people wear makeup because they want to look more feminine, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look more professional, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look more sensual, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look more intellectual, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look richer, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they want to look more attractive, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look more pretty, others don’t.
Some people wear makeup because they think it makes them look more masculine, others don’t.
